Liberal Jewish Synagogue London

Liberal Jewish Synagogue, London

Project details

Jones Melling was appointed by The Liberal Jewish Synagogue to undertake a detailed defect survey of the Grade II listed façade of its synagogue building, which overlooks Lords Cricket Ground in St Johns Wood, London.

The original building was bombed in the Second World War to the point that only the original façade was left standing and was able to be salvaged. In the early 1980s a new synagogue and residential apartment block was built on the site behind the existing façade.

The façade is now a Grade II listed structure, which is of special interest and warranting every effort to preserve it.

The building survey carried out by Jones Melling highlighted a number of defects to the façade structure as well as outlining the process required and issues that may arise if the façade stone was cleaned.

Associated budget costings, methods and processes were also put forward to the client. Jones Melling was then instructed to liaise with the local authority’s listed building officer to compile a specification of works for the façade, covering the remedial works required, and to manage the project.

Jones Melling liaised with the local authority to agree the works required, with special regard to sympathetic stone cleaning. The works were subsequently put out to tender and Jones Melling managed a tender review and appointed the contractor.

We then managed and administered the works on site via a contract administration process.

As a result, the façade was brought back to its former glory, meeting the requirements of the client but in accordance with its listed classification.

Jones Melling was also appointed by the client to provide design, specification and contract administration during the refurbishment and extension of their function rooms and meeting space.
